Notes for Journal Contributors

The Editor welcomes contributions on any aspect of co-operation and related subjects areas: in particular on co-operative sectors (consumer, housing, worker, agricultural, credit and other forms); co-operatives in different countries; and other sectors within the 'social economy', including mutual businesses, credit banks and building societies, community businesses, and member-based non-profits. There are four ways of contributing:

  • Short articles of around 2000 words which are not refereed but are assessed on the basis of their general interest and readability. Only one copy need be submitted.

  • Longer articles of 4000-8000 words which will be subject to anonymous peer review by two specialist referees. They should be preceded by a title page which does not contain the author's name, and a short summary of up to 100 words. Three copies should be submitted, and authors are invited to submit and outline proposal for discussion.

  • Letters to the editor usually of no more than 500 words. These must bear the name and address of the writer.

  • Reviews and review articles; the former should be no more than 600 words, the latter 2000 words. They are usually commissioned by the review editor, Dr Peter Davis, Dept of Law, Leicester University, Leicester LE1 7RH.

Articles should be double spaced on A4 paper and
accompanied by a disc copy in Word or RTF format.. Paragraphs should be marked by a three-space indent, and sub-headings should be used sparingly. Main headings should be lower case in bold, sub-headings lower case in italics (a lower level of sub-sub heading should be avoided). Quotations of less than 20 words should be put in the text with single quotation marks. Quotes of more than 20 words should be indented and delineated by a space at top and bottom, but without quotation marks.

References should use superscript numbers in the text and full endnotes rather than the Harvard system (non-academic readers find the Harvard system of referencing names and dates in brackets in the text rather distracting). A short description of the author's current job title (or one previous title), should be included at the end, in bold print. Page proofs will normally only be sent to authors of refereed articles, and they should aim to return these within seven days.

Authors of short articles, refereed articles and book reviews will receive two complimentary copies of the Journal. Authors of refereed articles will also receive 10 copies of their own article.
