Editor, International Journal of Co-operative Management.

Company Secretary, The New Harmony Press, A worker co-operative publisher.

Special Advisor ICA Human Resource Development Committee

Peter Davis has been the author of four books and over thirty chapters, referred papers, and research monographs on co-operative management, leadership and development in the last ten years. For details all publications visit the New Harmony Press web site. He along with his associate John Donaldson have pioneered the concept of co-operative value based management as a distinctive approach to management in co-operatives.  For definition of co-operative management role and function see Davis (1995); for the seven principles of Co-operative Management see Davis and Donaldson (1998). For a detailed analysis of the applications co-operative management in all the functional aspects of modern management see Davis (1999) and Davis (2004) both the latter works carry authorised case studies on the UK Co-operative Bank. He has also developed a micro level anti-poverty strategy based on developing the domestic economy and exploring the latter’s role and relationship to the money economy. (See Davis, 2000)

Peter is a special adviser to the ICA HRD Committee and has been acknowledged as an expert on the co-operatives by the UN. In 2002 he was appointed the Rabobank Fellow in Co-operative Agribusiness who funded the presentation of his work on co-operative management at Monash University seminar held in Christchurch New Zealand for chief executives of Australian and New Zealand  co-operative agribusinesses. He has been a keynote or plenary speaker at international conferences organised by the World Council of Credit Unions, (2) Asian Confederation of Credit Unions, (4) The International Co-operative Alliance: Asia Pacific and Americas Regional Conferences (2) in addition he presented his ideas at over thirty other international conferences, research seminars and national level conferences all over the world.

Peter has also developed fifteen distance learning modules and twenty short course modules in various aspects of co-operative and credit union management development and pioneered the first masters level distance learning programme in co-operative management. This work was  DfID funded. Peter’s significant contribution to the development of co-operative management development capacity building in Africa was acknowledged by Prof Chambo, Principal of the Moshi University College in Co-operative and Business Studies at his inaugural address before the President of Tanzania in May 2006. Peter is a twice past Chair of the Society for Co-operative Studies.

Research

My doctoral research focused on the impact of the Co-operative movement on communities during the twentieth century. It explores the economic, political and social impact of Co-operation, together with the role Co-operative societies played in the wider labour movement.
I have been awarded the Economic History Society’s R.H. Tawney Fellowship. My current research project (to be published by Ashgate) examines the impact of the Co-operative movement on working-class economies and communities in England, Scotland and Wales, and incorporates a comparative study of European Co-ops. There is a particular focus on gender relations, the cultural activities of the movement, internal relations between worker and employers, consumer activism and labour politics.
I am also co-editing a collection which will illustrate issues of consuming identities and practices through the Co-op.
